Hmm. Just for the record, you could also recover from this sort of thing
with knoppix. It's actually pretty simple--boot into knoppix, chroot
into your hard drive (chroot /mnt/hda1 or whatever it is), and then you
should be able to run grub-install from there (using your installed
grub). You can also use knoppix's grub with the --root-dir option.
