Over the past couple of years, I've proselytized at least a couple of dozen
people into the Temple of GNU/Linux. Some of these people now have their own
disciples. Having gotten the bulk of my initiation from Ken Shan and Dylan
Thurston myself, I've realized that having access to humans is an essential
part of joining this cult and learning the lore. Free software is a social
movement.
As I continue to receive questions from an increasingly large pool of people,
and some of these people's people, I thought it might be a good idea to set up
a mailing list for mutual support for disciples I've brought on board, their
descendants, as well as my mentors. While there exist several "linux newbies"
lists on the Internet already, new users are sometimes reluctant to post to
them, and the ratio of newbies to experts may be too high. Besides which, I
think having a disciples list based on a "community of interest" would be a
good thing.
Here are some goals for the list:
- to be a relatively low traffic support group where people at various stages of development can pose questions in a safe environment where they won't be attacked for not knowing something.
- to give newbies a chance to see what other people are asking, and maybe learnthings they never knew to ask.
- to give people who have been in the movement for a little longer anopportunity to help those newer than them, and consequently to take some ofthe support burden off of me.
- to preserve a public archive of these questions, to add to the mass of linux answers that can be googled.
etc..
So there's the pitch. Please subscribe to this list!
