Never mind. The following worked without deleting my data...

Booted up the installer and went through the motions until the partition 
manager came up.
Opted to manually partition the drive.
Changed Use as to ext and configured the mount point to /
Then chose to Finish partitioning and write changes to disk.
Chose Yes.
At the Not installing to unclean target error, selected Go Back and pressed 
continue on the next screen.
Chose 'install grub' 
Got a bunch of errors
Did it again
Got some more (different) errors.
Rebooted and it all worked swell.
