[Linux-disciples] trouble getting IP address with ath0

I got with:

iwconfig ath0 essid "RoamAbout Default Network Name"

Thanks! Now, is there a way to "roam" with the wireless card to see what
(public) essid's are available in the area? For example, I have a strong
wireless connection at home, but I'm refused an IP address.
