There are also various automatic mount/unmounting systems. I haven't kept up
with exactly what works best, still being a command-line umount man myself,
but my impression from recent Ubuntu releases is that you should be able to
just insert and yank USB storage devices with abandon. If you're not using
the most recent Ubuntu but an older version or another distribution, you
could still get the packages that manage automounting and that should do the
trick.
