First of all, I'd be surprised if your fstab were getting
larger; fstab is something that you have to edit manually.
Maybe /etc/mtab?

But secondly, is it possible that you're not unmounting the
USB devices properly before you disconnect them? I'd imagine
that if you unmount, you'll always reuse the same device ID.
But I'm not sure.
