[Linux-disciples] Ubuntu and Debian not seeing my HD

I've got a new hard drive for my ThinkPad R51, but neither
the Ubuntu installer nor the Debian installer can see it.
Only they don't-see-it in a weird way: when the installer
gets to the partitioning stage, it says, "Here are your
partitions; you can configure them here." Then there's
nothing listed. My problem is basically identical with this
user's:

Has anyone else had this problem?

It *could* be a hardware problem: the repair people told me
that everything on the machine was fine, and that only the
hard drive was dead (I dropped the laptop last Friday). They
could be wrong. It's also possible that I've inserted the
new HD improperly into the bay, but I doubt it: I've tried
it in both possible orientations, and I get the same results
each time.
