[Linux-disciples] hotkeys volume control

I have a MS Natural Multimedia Keyboard- with preset buttons on the top. I
am using hotkeys, which works great. However, the /etc/hotkeys.conf file
does not have anything (that I can see) about assigning volume control. When
I press the volume up/down buttons,
I get the error
"nahash at ubuntu:/$ hotkeys: Unable to open `/dev/mixer': No such file or
directory"
I tried making a softlink to alsamixer, and I get
"hotkeys: Unable to read the volume of `/dev/mixer': Inappropriate ioctl for
device"
This seems like it should be simple, but I can't think of what to do. Any
help?
