[Linux-disciples] CUPS wants a password

What user is cups running as? Creating a new group and adding yourself won't
accomplish anything if it's not the group cups runs as.
Try
ps aux | grep cups
and see what you get.
As far as the /dev/lp0 permissions--if you're using udev, there is a
configuration file, I believe in /etc/udev, that lets you specify the
permissions for device nodes when they are created. I've done this before
but forget the details at the moment.
Who owns /dev/lp0 by default? What are the permissions?
ls -l /dev/lp0
Normally, /dev/lp0 should already be in group lp and group-writable, so if
you are in that group it should be fine.
Incidentally, normally all this printing stuff is now handled by higher
level (i.e. GNOME) functions that make all of this transparent. You
shouldn't really need to be mucking around with this stuff.
