[Linux-disciples] Virtual consoles

During some Ubuntu upgrade or other a few months ago, X.org
started to not respond to the virtual-console-switch keys
(Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7]). If I do sudo chvt [1-7], it works fine,
and once I get to the console I can use Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] just
fine. Some Ubuntu user filed a bug here:
https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=19585
and has been basically the only one posting to it. So I have
two questions:
1) Does anyone know enough about X to figure out why the
proper keycodes aren't coming through?
2) Why does 'sudo chvt [1-7]' work, but not 'chvt [1-7]'
alone?
