[Linux-disciples] X.org stops working after upgrade

I'm using X.org under Ubuntu, but this question isn't Ubuntu
(or X.org) specific. After today's X.org upgrade, I get
these errors when I try to start GDM:

(EE) Failed to load module "v4l" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "keyboard" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "mouse" (module does not exist, 0)
	(EE) No drivers available.

	Fatal server error:
	no screens found

Any idea how to debug this? In /etc/X11/xorg.conf I have

Section "Device"
Identifier	"ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility 9000 (M7 LW)"
	Driver "ati"
	BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

and later on I have

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility 9000 (M7 LW)"
	Monitor "Generic Monitor"
	DefaultDepth	24

I suspect this is the way it's always been, but I could be
wrong.

Where would I find the modules? I see that there's

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules

within which (including subdirs) I find no files containing
the string 'ati'. I'm not sure what else to hunt for.

Thoughts?
