I use unison to synchronize my mail.  It does go both directions: I
normally read mail on my laptop, but sometimes ssh to the server
(bostoncoop).

If you want to do this (rather than fetchmail), I recommend switching to
the maildir format for your mail folders, so that there are separate
files to synchronize, and having your mail delivered to a maildir file.
I use procmail to do this.
