[Linux-disciples] changing sources - leaving ubuntu

Is it possible/desirable to change apt sources? Ubuntu has served me
well as far as getting my video card to work etc. But it seems rather
paternalistic. I have been having a lot of things crash, and am having
difficulties with others. Also, I can't get kde to install because of
an infinite loop of dependencies.

I installed my system with the following apt/sources.list

"deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty universe

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty-security main
restricted

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty main restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty main restricted
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ warty-security main
restricted"

I then updated and tried to upgrade with the following. It seems that
it has more current packages. About 700 out of 800 got marked for
upgrading. However, it does not fully work.

Any advice? Should I work with the ubuntu defaults and work my problems
out one by one or upgrade?
