Revised answers below. I now have another monitor,
making this game much easier. I am still working on
getting ubuntu.

For "WAN Connection Type" I have selected "PPPoE" not
DHCP Client.

However, there is a "LAN" page, where I have "DHCP
Server" enabled and "DNS Proxy" enabled.

I have the option to assign a fixed IP to a MAC, but
in my experimenting on the windows machine, this
option did not work.

My /etc/network/interface is as follows:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface etho inet dhcp

Ping says “64 bytes from 192.168.8.100" [...] 0%
packet loss.

Trying to open 192.168.8.100 in mozilla or konquerer
gives "could not connect to host 192.168.8.100".

After about two minutes, it reports nothing and gives
me back the command line.

"Operation failed."
