Yeah, I think the whole UI needs a little work so that this
is all straightforward.

However, I am quite happy to note that

a) Skype seems to treat Linux as a coequal partner:
   http://www.skype.com/products/skype/linux/
   and moreover, it gives equal love to each distribution.

b) Skype's Linux support is also decent:
   http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=subcat&_i=11

Now if I could just get this mic working ...
