Have you tried catting something right to the sound device?
There are subtleties in alsamixer that don't make it quite obvious when
mute is on (which is separate from the volume being turned all the way
down).
You also might have pressed a hardware mute/volume button?
I prefer rexima to alsamixer, you might try that, too.
