[Linux-disciples] No sound from ALSA

Last night I tried to get the mic on my laptop working for
Skype, so I futzed around with the mic controls in
alsamixer. I never did get the mic working (it may be that
ALSA's only looking at the mic plug, not at the built-in
external mic), and in the meantime I seem to have turned off
my speakers.
I have no controls muted in alsamixer, yet I'm still not
getting any sound. Any idea how to diagnose what needs to be
turned back on? I think I can rule out any lower-level
problems (ESD bug, bad permissions on /dev/*, and so forth).
