[Linux-disciples] Stitching together JPEGs into a PDF

I'm in the middle of downloading all the links in here:
http://www.walenz.org/vonNeumann/
(John von Neumann's "Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata,"
if you're curious -- I'm excited to see that it's on the web
for free)
and it turns out that the organization of those HTML files
leaves something to be desired. Each is HTML with a GIF
inside. I'd prefer to have one single file.
So: how might I stick all the JPEGs together in a single PDF
file, so that I could scroll through it at my leisure? The
JPEGs are conveniently numbered sequentially: 001.jpg
through 406.jpg, so it should be easy to script this if I
know which tools to put together.
