I am trying to get smooth playback on my DVD. It appears that I need to
recompile my kernel. Unfortunately, I do not know where to begin on Ubuntu.
In my old settup, I simply "cd linux" and then "make menuconfig". But there
is no directory "linux".

$ hdparm /dev/cdrom1

/dev/cdrom1:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 0 (off)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument

In my /boot/config-2.6.10-386 the following is included...

# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_FORCED is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_PCI_AUTO=y
CONFIG_IDEDMA_ONLYDISK=y

# CONFIG_IDE_CHIPSETS is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
# CONFIG_IDEDMA_IVB is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y
