Tiger (OS X 10.4) will support ACLs out of the box:
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/
How difficult would it be to get this working in Linux? It
galls me to see Apple saying,
"New support for access control lists (ACLs) provides
flexible file system permissions that are fully compatible
with the native file permissions of Windows 2003 and Windows
XP — a capability unprecedented on any UNIX- or Linux-based
platform. ACLs give administrators fine-grained control over
server settings and permissions, protecting applications and
data from unauthorized use and modification. In addition,
all user-based services in Tiger Server support service
access control lists (SACLs) — so it’s easy to specify which
users and groups may access different services."
