The thinkpad requires the Atheros wifi drivers.  They are nonfree in a
funny way:

    The madwifi driver contains a binary hal library because of FCC
    regulations and thus taints the kernel.

So they aren't included in the stock kernel.  Most other distributions
(including Knoppix) do include them so you just boot up and wifi is
recognized.

Detailed step-by-step directions for building and installing the madwifi
modules under Debian are here:

You (Nirmal) should follow those directions once you've got everything
else working and are running a 2.6 kernel.
