If you're using a router to connect to the Internet, you shouldn't be
using PPP at all on your laptop. The router should have the PPP username
and password, and the laptop should just request an IP address from the
router and that's all. Is this not how it is set up?

You won't have wifi until you install madwifi-modules, but first focus on
getting regular ethernet to work. The device will actually be ath0
rather than eth0.
