My approach -- lame though it be -- is to take off
strategically-chosen keys where the gunk seems to be at its
maximum, then spank the hell out of the keyboard to shake
out errant hairballs and so forth. This sometimes leads to
even less-functioning keyboards (gunk falling into contacts,
I assume), but more often it does the trick.
I've always wanted one of those keyboard suction devices. I
think that might help with this process.
Depending on how much you value your time, it may just be a
better idea to buy new keyboards. People often give them
away.
