I recently went through this but I've forgotten exactly what the answer
is.
What happens if you do
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig
before running configure?
There is something tricky about this package config stuff--once I
remember it I'll post it.
You should also make sure sndfile is actually version >= 1.0.0.
