How do I help ./configure find what it is looking for?
For example, I am trying to install ardour and it
stops at...

"checking for sndfile >= 1.0.0... Package sndfile was
not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing
`sndfile.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'sndfile' found

configure: error: Library requirements (sndfile >=
1.0.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH
environment variable if your libraries are in a
nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them."

>> locate sndfile.pc

gives me

>> /usr/lib/pkgconfig/sndfile.pc

This piece of knowledge will make many aspects of life
considerably easier. Any help?
