There is /var/backups (at least on Debian systems), which contains
automatic backups of important status files (e.g., dpkg). I don't see
why you couldn't put your backups under that.
But at least as far as I'm aware, there is no wholly canonical place. I
personally might put them under /root, assuming root is the user with
the rdiff-backup cron job.
