[Linux-disciples] Backup destination directory

I'm recommending to someone that he use rdiff-backup to
backup all his client machines to a server machine, which he
can then offsite-backup to soemwhere else. I'm recommending
that, for instance, he backup /etc on [machineName] to
/[directoryName]/[machineName]/etc
My question is: what should [directoryName] be? Where in the
Linux hierarchy are backups supposed to go? I've seen a few
people use /exports for NFS exports, and of course use /mnt
for NFS imports. Is there some standard place in the
hierarchy for backups?

``I observed that 'LOTR' fans should 'get a life.' I meant
this as an affectionate ironic throwaway, but have
received dozens of wounded e-mails from Ring devotees who
believe 'LOTR' has, indeed, given them a life, and after
seeing 'The Chronicles of Riddick,' I agree. They have a
life. The prospect of become an expert on 'Riddick,' in
contrast, is too depressing to contemplate.''
