Without exaggeration, I can say I've fixed about 20 "linux" sound 
problems this way.  With exaggeration, I can say I've fixed about 250 
such problems.

If you use xosd and the thinkpad modules, you'll at least see a little 
indicator on the bottom of your display when you mute or change volume 
with the hardware volume buttons.
