[Linux-disciples] USB scanners and Linux

I'm looking into getting a USB scanner -- the HP ScanJet
5590 -- for a client. This page seems to be the best source
for USB scanners under Linux:

It's also almost two years out of date. Has Linux scanner
compatibility proceeded apace, like compatibility for all
other hardware? Does anyone have experience with USB
scanners under Linux? How about the 5590 in particular?
