You probably do need a compiled kernel tree in place, not just the source
code.
Also note that you're not using a true "stock" kernel--you're using a
Debian kernel. You may need to do a Debian kernel build on the
source... (make-kpkg)
I've also always been a little confused as to the difference between
apt-get install kernel-source-2.6.5-1-686
and
apt-get source kernel-image-2.6.5-1-686
I know they're different, but not exactly sure how.
(by the way, the verb is "bunzip" not "un-bzip")
