I don't quite understand how you would do this, since dhclient is a
binary, but apparently it worked for you (?).

Well, again, it's an unstable/stable mixing issue. dhclient in unstable
does fine with 2.6.x (for me). dhclient in stable is 2 years old, when
2.6 was just a twinkle in Bill Gates' eye (I don't know that 2.5 had even
started at that point, although the regexp above suggests it had).
It does perhaps highlight one of the great weaknesses of Debian: the
stable release is very old, and the unstable release is trickier to
install than other distributions. In a few months, Debian will be very
new again, and everything will be good for anothe year or so.
