For what it is worth I have commuted to work in Oakland/Bezerkely, San  
Diego, and Boston and thru many cities on a x-country trip:  not much  difference 
that I can recall  (the street are a little straighter in  the west).  The main 
difference I see in the past 20 years is the sheer  volume of cars seems to 
have increased exponentially:  may only be  perception but I think this is what 
keeps kids and adults off the two  wheelers.
