Landry’s Bicycles Signs on as Key MassBike Supporter; Advocates for Safe
Routes to School Initiative



Landry’s Bicycles, recently named one of the Top 100 Best Bicycle Retailers
in the country by a panel of leading manufacturers, has signed on as a $5000
supporter of MassBike’s advocacy efforts. Landry’s will be the chief sponsor
of our Safe Routes to School advocacy initiative, which works to get more
kids biking and walking to school.



MassBike Board Member and Landry’s Danvers store manager Alison Dewey, along
with Landry’s Marketing Manager Jack Johnson, will accompany MassBike to
Washington, D.C. in two weeks for the National Bike Summit to push for
federal Safe Routes to School funding and other bike-related issues.

urging support of Safe Routes to School and bike funding in general, please

Buy a Pie and Help MassBike: Friday, March 11 at Petsi Pies



Got pie? Please consider buying a delicious handmade pie (or cookie,
cupcake, or coffee) to help MassBike! On Friday, March 11, Petsi Pies (285
Beacon St., Somerville, on the Cambridge line between Porter and Inman
Squares) will donate 20% of the day’s sales to MassBike.



Cyclists will also get a free scone with your purchase—just remember to show
your helmet. Special thanks go to owner and cyclist Renee McLeod.



Help Wanted at Broadway Bicycle School, a MassBike Business Partner



The Broadway Bicycle School, a collectively-owned bike repair and sales shop
located at 351 Broadway in Cambridge, is seeking a Bicycle Mechanic/Customer
Service Representative. Apply now through March 11 for this full-time
position, running from April—September (possibly longer). The job pays
$9.00/hour, more with experience, and you must be available Saturdays and
some Sundays. Mechanical experience is preferred, but they are willing to
train, and women and people of color are encouraged to apply. For additional

Advocacy Update: Transportation Enhancements Funding



Thanks to all the MassBike members and advocates who called or wrote to
Governor Romney last week regarding potential cuts to bicycling funds, due
to a mandate from the federal government that the state give back some of
its transportation funding. MassBike is keeping close watch on the situation
and the administration has told us they believe the give-back will have no
effect on the state’s ability to deliver on current or proposed bike and
pedestrian projects. We are awaiting their more detailed response and will
keep our members posted. Thank you again for your advocacy efforts and
making your voice heard.



TODAY is the Deadline for Signing Up to be a League Cycling Instructor:
Register Now!



Would you like to teach cycling skills to others? Today is the deadline to
register for MassBike and the League of American Bicyclists’ training to be
a League Cycling Instructor. Register now! This weekend-long training
(Friday night through Sunday afternoon, April 15-17) will take place in
Waltham, and is the only such training this year in New England. As a
prerequisite, you must have taken the “Road I” (aka Cycling Skills)
class—you can also register for this at the MassBike website,
www.massbike.org. The cost of the training is $175, payable to the League of
American Bicyclists.

MassBike Event at O’Naturals in Davis Square Postponed



Due to a delay of the Grand Opening of O’Naturals in Davis Square, MassBike’
s event at O’Naturals will also be postponed. The new event date is
Saturday, April 2, and 10% of your O’Naturals purchases that day will
benefit MassBike. Please watch this space for more details.





Northeast Bicycle Club Hosts Introduction to Bicycle Racing Classes



Want to learn about bike racing? The Northeast Bicycle Club, the sponsor of
MassBike’s Bike Festival Pie Race (coming up on August 27), is offering the
chance to learn handling and racing skills, tactics and strategies, and to
get information about training and equipment. The course is $5 for licensed
riders; $25 for unlicensed riders, and applications must be received by
March 23.

Chapter Update: MassBike-MetroBoston Chapter Elects Officers

The MassBike-MetroBoston chapter elected officers at last month’s meeting.
Congratulations to Chair Chris Porter, Co-Chair Gene Koo, Treasurer Jon
Niehof, and Secretary Trevor Schroeder. The next chapter meeting will be

Do you live in or near Waltham? Would you be willing to open your home to a
cyclist from the Worcester area who will be attending MassBike’s League
Cycling Instructor training? It’s a long schlep back to Central Mass for
this cyclist, who primarily relies on his bike for transportation. If you
can put him up the weekend of April 15-17, please email Nate at
