[Linux-disciples] amd64/pae (>4GB RAM) troubleshooting

Does anyone have experience troubleshooting 64-bit/pae kernel issues?

I recently found a cheap quad core CPU/6GB RAM mobo/high end video card 
on craigslist and installed it. I've worked through a lot of 
configuration difficulties but got stuck with instability trying to use 
 >4GB RAM, with either a pae or amd64 kernel. The issues aren't 
reproducible but are frequent -- lots of processes segfault for no 
reason, then after a while it seems that nothing works at all and the 
system is so unstable that it needs rebooting. Any ideas how to start 
narrowing the issue? The system seems decently stable with a standard 
32-bit kernel.
