The above doesn't quite work, in at least my particular
case. For both machines, it's prompting for a password.
Recall that ssh prompts come out over stderr, like you'd
expect. So I get the host2 prompt just fine. But then
host1's prompt goes out over stderr, and it seems as though
host2 is putting host1's stderr into its own (i.e., host2's
own) stdout. So then the '> ~/local_filename' picks up the
prompt and I never see it.
For reasons that needn't detain us now, I can't do
public-key auth against these machines; I'll always have to
wait for a password prompt. That complicates things
somewhat.
