[Linux-disciples] External USB drive

I have a "FreeAgent Pro" 750 MB external USB hardrive. It works fine in
Windows, but not so great in linux. For the most part, everything is O.K.,
but sometimes the drive becomes inaccessible or certain large folders, such
as "movies" or "music" will be indicated in nautilus as an "unknown file
type." A preview of quirky things to come can be seen by whether the
appropriate icon for the drive, which resides on the drive itself, is
correct. If not, a simple umount and mount does the trick, but sometimes
the following happens...

church at ubuntu:~$ sudo umount /dev/sdb1
Password:
church at ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1
Error reading bootsector: Input/output error
Failed to startup volume: Input/output error
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE!
The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was
made to NTFS by this software.
church at ubuntu:~$

Ignoring all these instructions and exclamations, I mount again, and it
almost works, that is, I can access the drive with no problem in nautilus
from the mount point "/home/church/yellow", but from the desktop, clicking
on the icon gives me, "Nautilus cannot display "/home/church/yellow"".

I would really like this to be consistently reliable. My best guess as to
what happens is that when the drive goes to sleep after 15 minutes,
unpredictable things happen at wake up. Has anybody else had experience
with this sort of drive?
