[Linux-disciples] Symlinks to gcc

I noticed just now that there was no /usr/bin/gcc symlink,
so I created it manually. I looked around to see if I was
missing some package that would have created that symlink;
the best I could find was this:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gcc-3.3/+bug/11691

which, apart from being hopelessly BOFH-arrogant, suggests
that there is not supposed to be any such symlink. Which is
odd. I swear I've never had to create such symlinks before;
they've always been there automatically.

What am I missing?
