[Linux-disciples] "ICE default IO error handler doing an exit()"

Has anyone else ever gotten this error?

"ICE default IO error handler doing an exit()"

It's normally followed by the PID of the process that got
the error. It seems to happen, at the very least, when one
process invokes a sub-process. So when mutt invokes vim for
a new message, for instance, I get this error. Actually, it
seems like vim is fine, but vim can't process ~/.vimrc. And
then when I try to send the message in mutt, in fails --
presumably because it can't invoke postfix, or postfix fails
when doing an exit().

This is the only Linux error I've ever had that basically
requires me to reboot. I can't sudo a command, because sudo
suffers from this same error. Hence I can't restart whatever
daemon might have been the problem here. And I can't just
switch to a virtual terminal and see if X is the problem,
because

a) I'm still having the keyboard problem I mentioned months
ago, wherein Ctrl+Alt+F[0-6] doesn't work; and
b) 'chvt' is a privileged operation, so I need to sudo it,
   which I can't do.

I suppose my first step is to get the keyboard working to
try a).
