[Linux-disciples] Weird characters in Gentoo terminals

My Gentoo terminals at work are displaying certain
characters weirdly. E.g.,
http://laniels.org/img/weird_characters_gentoo_terminal.png
which should be using various ASCII characters to display
subthread marks.
What might be causing the weirdness? It's not the terminal
program itself -- I tried it with Konsole and with
Gnome-Terminal, and it's the same in both. My locale is set
fine:
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
I assume it's trying to access some ASCII codepoint, not
finding the appropriate glyph in some table, and
displaying empty boxes instead. So where do I get the right
set of glyphs?
