[Linux-disciples] Auto-replies

A friend wants to know how to set up an auto-reply message
under Linux. I'm ashamed to admit that I've never done such
a thing before. The auto-replier would need to
1) not email mailing lists,
2) only reply to a given person once,
3) etc.
So it's kind of non-trivial. I could hack something with
procmail, but I'm certain this has been solved well a
billion times. What's the normal approach?
