[Linux-disciples] LaTeX/AMS-LaTeX question

Quick LaTeX question: is there any way to specify that you
mean unary minus ("the number that's 5 less than 0 is -5")
rather than binary minus ("a - b = 2")? I've typed

f(a \given -b)

with \given defined as

\newcommand{\given}{\,|\,}

and the minus sign is garishly overlarge.
