[Linux-disciples] Identifying the distro

[Stephen R Laniel]

Is there any portable way to identify which Linux distro
you're running? I'm writing a script that needs to know
whether it's looking at a Debian, Gentoo, FreeBSD, or
whatnot system. 'uname -s' returns 'Linux', say, but not
which distro.
