That can usually be done with one of the fn keys--usually fn-f5 or fn-f8.
There are also various command line tools depending on your video card. I
think I've used something called i855crt in the past. There is also
something in /proc/acpi/ibm if you have the Thinkpad modules loaded that
will switch between displays.
