I don't know the answer to your question, but presumably on a production
machine you'll be running Debian Stable, and "upgrading bind" will be a very
rare event. Aside from security upgrades (I don't think there has been one
for quite a while on BIND), you would need to deal with this every couple of
years.
At EPIC, we had a similar machine running, I believe, potato, because it
still worked fine. Although you probably don't want to continue running a
distribution once security update support is dropped.
