Well, right. I thought I was clear that that's what I want
to do, but perhaps not.

Doing an ifconfig will also fail in other circumstances --
e.g., if the coffeeshop has assigned me an IP address but
hasn't validated my MAC address. It gives me an IP so that
when I open my web browser I have to go through its
validation page, but I'm not actually online in the sense
that I can connect to any remote host. That's why I
suggested pinging -- because it will only work if I have an
IP *and* have been validated.
