Oops, sorry: I should have read farther:

'function specifies which action to take when key is
pressed. For a complete list of functions, see the
reference. The special function noop unbinds the specify key
sequence.'

So I wanted

bind pager e noop
bind index e noop

Seems like 'unbind pager e' would be more intuitive. Maybe
I'll file a bug.
