Well, right, but making a node that actually does something
depends upon whether the system can do anything with the
major and minor version numbers. That, in turn, depends on
the presence of a module, if I'm not mistaken.

Try that mknod on your end, then try doing

echo foo > /dev/tcp/hostname/port

If your system is anything like mine, nothing will happen.
If something does happen, I'm curious how your system
differs from mine.
