I'm not sure if this is the right answer, but my inclination
is to say: if you don't know what they are, you probably
don't need them. See the manpage for iptables (run
'man 8 iptables'):

iptables - administration tool for IPv4 packet filtering and NAT
I don't know firestarter, but the blurb about it --
firestarter - gtk program for managing and observing your firewall
-- suggests that it merely *monitors* a firewall rather than
actually running one. I suspect you have another firewall
running. Perhaps it depends on iptables.
