Without contributing anything about Palm Pilots and Linux, I
will just observe that you should almost never need to
compile anything; that's the very point of a distribution.
To check whether a particular package exists in Debian, do
apt-cache search [keywords]
where 'keywords' are words describing the package that you
care about. When you find a package that looks promising --
e.g., see the results of an apt-cache search for 'palm
pilot' below -- you do 'apt-cache show [package name]',
where 'package name' comes from the apt-cache search that
you just did. E.g., here are the results of 'apt-cache show
autopilot':
Package: autopilot
Priority: extra
Section: otherosfs
Installed-Size: 72
Maintainer: Tommi Virtanen <tv at debian.org>
Architecture: i386
Version: 1.21-1
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4)
Filename: pool/main/a/autopilot/autopilot_1.21-1_i386.deb
Size: 6652
MD5sum: 4357697e4515a5649a239729868d29d6
Description: Monitor the DTR line of /dev/palm and run a command to start sync
AutoPilot monitors the DTR line of /dev/palm, waiting for it to go
from LOW to HIGH, which is used to activate a command automatically
to make syncing easier. It can be used to boot up your favourite Palm
syncer.
If that looks like what you want, install it using synaptic
(never used it, but it sounds cool) or
sudo apt-get install [package name]
-- e.g., 'sudo apt-get install autopilot'.
