Try putting ftp://hostname.com in the Nautilus location bar and see if
that works. You might need a Nautilus plugin.

Nautilus used to be more like a "browser" where you moved through
directories in the same window, but where was a consensus that a
"spatial finder" is more intuitive (a la OS 9).

If you want all the folders to be in the same window you can:

  - Hold down CTRL (I believe--your metakey may vary) while double
clicking, and the old window will close when the new window opens
  - Right click on a folder and choose "browse this folder" which will
switch you to the browser/navigational view rather than the spatial
    view.
  - Change the gconf key /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_browser to
"1". You can edit gconf keys with the graphical app gconf-editor.
This will permanently switch nautilus to prefer the browser view.
